Identification

The colour varies from dusky to pale, with large chocolate brown spots on the head and body. They can grow to a maximum length of 60 cm.
Three barbells, one on the bottom jaw and two on the snout, giving the fish with its common name.

Habitat

Found in pools on rocky shores and in deep water on rocky ground over 100m. It prefers rocky areas with plenty of algal cover and may also be found in sea grass beds.
