Usually orange but can range from pale brown to violet.
Can grow up to 52 cm in diameter.
It has five arms that are often slightly turned up at the tip.
White spines on body with a line of spines down arms.
Widespread in Britain and Ireland. Can be found on sandy, gravely or rocky bottoms from the lower shore to depths of 650 m. Large populations
Large populations often invade rocky shores consuming all mussels and barnacles in their path. Starfish feet work by hydraulic pressure and can prise apart shellfish such as mussels. Severed arms may be capable of becoming new individuals.
