Identification

The male can grow up to 35 cm in length and the female up to 30 cm.
Females and non functional males are red or orange red.
Females have black and white blotches on back with a slim body.
The colouration is different between the sexes and varies constantly.
The female is red to orange red in colour with white on the rear dorsal and adjacent tail fin.

Habitat

Common over rocks and hard ground, normally found amongst algae or eel grass, all around northern Europe.

Species fact

Young males are similar in colour to the female.
Older males are normally blue and orange in colour.
