Usually golden brown with dappled markings with a striking brown spot in middle of body. Can grow up to 70 cm in length. Has a sad expression.
Western coasts, Irish Sea and English Channel coasts and rarely in the North Sea. Deeper water over sands and muds.
Feeds on other fish by stealth and snapping with it large extendable mouth.
When hunting the fins can tremble and the coloured markings alter to confuse prey. May bury itself on its side in muds like a flatfish.
Known in Europe as 'St Peters fish'
