Males develop a bright yellow body, blue edged fins and jet black heads when breading.
Females are grey, brown with vertical dark bars, have ability to mimic background. There are large 3 dorsal fins which are usually also yellow.
Found in shallow water, in rock crevices and pier pilings and are extremly fast. Mediterranean species known only in two locations in British waters, Portland Harbour and Roundham Head.
Can grow up to 9 cm in length.
True blennies have no scales and only one dorsal fin.
