Its colour can vary, from dark green to orange and red, variations may be due to the stage of the life cycle or the habitat or due to shedding.
The shell is much broader than long, up to 8 cm across.
The first pair of legs have well developed pincers.
Found on all types of shore from high water to about 60 m deep, but it is predominantly a shore and shallow water species.
Tolerates a wide range of salinities and is especially abundant in estuaries and salt marshes.
Before mating the male crab carries the female under his body for a few days. Females can hold up to 185,000 eggs at any one time.
