Identification

Usually a brown topside colour with small orange spots with a white underside.
Both eyes are on the right side of the head.
Has a square tail, smooth body with a few rough scales and prickly humps at the base of the back.

Habitat

Found in estuarine regions and to depths offshore of 50 metres.
Usually found in muddy environments, but also on sandy sea beds.
Can tolerate low salinities of water.

Species fact

Oval shaped flatfish growing to 50 cm long.
Some flounders have the eyes on the left side of the body.
